Ayumi Hamasaki

Ayumi Hamasaki is one of Japan's biggest popstars. Also known as Ayu to her fans, Hamasaki is highly influential in both music and fashion, and has been given the accolade of the "Empress of Pop". Her influence also extends outside Japan into countries such as China, Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

Born in Fukuoka in 1978, Ayumi Hamasaki moved to Tokyo at the age of fourteen to pursue her entertainment career. Her debut single was Poker Face and since then she has managed to sell 50 million records in Japan and has become an Asian fashion icon by constantly changing her image in a similar manner to US pop superstar Madonna.

Ayumi Hamasaki is undoubtedly a queen of the Japanese pop scene (the J-pop scene) and has released numerous singles and albums.
